The Schoolhouse Restaurant, John o' Groats

Below are sample menus for lunch and dinner. Please note, however, that we do change our menus daily and so these menus should be taken as a guide to the kind of food we offer and not as our actual menu for any given day.

Lunch Menu

Tomato soup
A chunky, home-made soup
Potted cheese
A smooth mix of cheeses with parsley and port
Eggs a la creme
An egg baked with mushrooms, cream and cheese

Main courses
Beef in beer
Beer casseroled in Dark Island Orkney Ale
Roast pork
Slow roasted pork served with a spicy chutney
Fish pie
Halibut and prawns in a white sauce with a boiled egg
Stuffed peppers
A baked pepper stuffed with rice, onions, mushrooms and blue cheese

Desserts
Apple crumble
An old family favourite made with fresh Braeburn apples
Egg custard
Our own recipe set egg custard pie
Chocolate sponge
A steamed chocolate sponge pudding with a rich chocolate sauce

Broccoli and Stilton soup
A creamed soup of fresh broccoli and creamy Stilton

A hard-boiled egg, stuffed with herby mushrooms and fried in breadcrumbs
Ginger potatoes
Potatoes with a spicy ginger coating served with a poached egg

Main courses
Venison medallion
Cooked rare in butter with redcurrant
Pork paprikash
Pork chops baked with paprika and cream
Skate wing
Lightly cooked with capers and black butter sauce
Sweet potato roulade
A 'Swiss roll' of sweet potato, filled with cream cheese and almonds

Desserts
Poached pears
A whole pear, peeled and poached in red wine with cinnamon
Plum and almond tart
Fresh plums and a layer of marzipan on a sponge base
Strathborgie mist
Lightly mashed pears with vanilla, topped with lemon and ginger whipped cream
